Confederate records were taken from National Archives Record Group 109 microfilm series M253.

Each volunteer soldier has one Compiled Military Service Record (CMSR) for each regiment in which he served. The CMSR contains basic information about the soldier's military career, and it is the first source the researcher should consult. The CMSR is an envelope (a jacket) containing one or more cards. These cards typically indicate that the soldier was present or absent during a certain period of time. Other cards may indicate the date of enlistment and discharge, amount of bounty paid him, and other information such as wounds received during battle or hospitalization for injury or illness. The soldier's place of birth may be indicated; if foreign born, only the country of birth is stated. The CMSR may contain an internal jacket for so-called "personal papers" of various kinds. These may include a copy of the soldier's enlistment paper, papers relating to his capture and release as a prisoner of war, or a statement that he had no personal property with him when he died.

Age 18 in 1861 - enlisted 17 Oct 1861 at Ooltewah -captured at Vicksburg, 4 July 1863.

Goans, Henry Co. G, 37 TN - b. 1842 in GA

1860 resides with father Jack and brothers Nathan and Richard

Goans, John Co. E, 35 TN b. 1820 TN - farm laborer at Soddy with wife Louisa and five children.

Goans, Nathan Co. E, 35TN b. 1823 TN - farm laborer at Soddy with wife Mary and two children.

Goins, Oscar Claiborne Co. B, 19 TN b. 24 Feb 1830 Grainger co, TN - son of Nancy Biby Goins - his parents moved to Hamilton County in 1833 and settled on a farm among the Cherokees.

At 16 he clerked in a mercantile house and married (1) in 1853 Nancy Florence Potter; 1858 he married (2) Esther Reynolds.

At the beginning of the war he joined Co. B, 19TN with the rank of Lt. He fought at Fishing Creek and Shiloh, then returned to Chattanooga to help raise the Lookout Battery with Capt. R. L. Barry in which he served as farrier. He fought with the battery at Baker's Creek and at Jackson under W.W. Loring. During the winter of 1863-64 he was taken sick and returned home, settling in Chattanooga in bad health

After the war he became a traveling salesman and in 1873 settled in Murray Co, GA, occupying the home built by Joe Vann a prominent Cherokee. Goins died 1903 in Bradley Co., TN.

Goins, William A. Co. A, 19 TN - enlisted 20 May 1861 in Knoxville and apparently transferred to Co. C, 43 TN - was captured 4 May 1863 at Grand Gulf, MS and taken to Alton, IL prison where he died 2 July 1864 of chronic diarrhea. Probably brother of O.C. Goins.
